Gravity

By measuring Earth’s gravity field, we are able to map variations in the mass distribution of Earth’s crust. These variations are due to differences in the composition of the bedrock.

SGU's Gravity data products is primarily used in bedrock mapping. The data can also be used for locating major aquifers. Other areas where gravity data is useful are in conjunction with exploration for ores, in various geodetic applications, for navigation and positioning purposes, deployment of strain gauges, and for calibrating precision balances.

Gravity measurements

The gravity data is based on gravity measurements available in the SGU database. The measurements have been carried out by SGU, Swedish National Land Survey and several other organisations and companies.

Geophysical ground measurements, gravity interpolated (overview)

Ikon-Produkter-60.png

The data product Geophysical ground measurements, gravity interpolated (overview) contains grid data that illustrates the variations in Sweden's gravity field, expressed as Bouguer anomalies. From point-by-point measurements of gravity throughout Sweden, Bouguer anomalies (mGal) have been calculated in the reference field RG82. These have then been gridded with a cell size of 500m x 500m and from this, contour lines have been generated with 1 mGal equidistance. From the grid, coordinate Bouguer anomalies have been extracted with the same point distance corresponding to the grid's cell size to a csv file.
